This portrait of Louis-Stanislas Xavier of France is a fine half-length studio copy of the full-length portrait painted by Hubert Drouais and exhibited by the artist at the 1775 Salon. The future Louis XVIII is shown wearing the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the sumptuous mantle of a Knight of the Holy Spirit. The painting by Drouais is now in the Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon (inv. MV3895). Several studio copies are known, also at Versailles (inv. MV3969, MV3970, MV 8324) as well as in Angers (MBA J 304): Louis-Stanislas Xavier, while Comte de Provence, wished to give his portrait to the city, and in the full-length painting he points to the 1736 map of Angers by Simon des Granges.
