Pieter Andreas Rysbraeck & Jean-Baptiste Huysmans

This landscape, animated by a hunter posing with his prey, is the happy result of the only known collaboration between the animal painter Pieter Andreas Rijsbrack and the landscape painter Jan-Baptist Huysmans. Rijsbrack, son of the Antwerp landscape painter Pieter Rysbrack, specialized in hunting scenes and still lifes and spent most of his career in England. Meanwhile Huysmans, older than his collaborator, was a landscape painter who had trained alongside his brother, Cornelis Huysmans. He was already a seasoned master at the time of this collaboration, and his landscape offers a generous backdrop for the hunter and his trophies, painted by his young collaborator, whose skills were already established. The impact of this harmonious composition naturally lies primarily in the respective talents of the two artists, but is enhanced by the spectacular size of its copper support.

Ce paysage animé par un chasseur posant avec le fruit de sa chasse est l’heureux résultat de l’unique collaboration connue à ce jour entre le peintre animalier Pieter Andreas Rijsbrack et le paysagiste Jan-Baptist Huysmans. Rijsbrack, fils du paysagiste anversois Pieter Rysbrack, s’est spécialisé dans les scènes de chasse et les natures mortes et fit l’essentiel de sa carrière en Angleterre. Huysmans quant à lui, plus âgé que son collaborateur, est un peintre de paysages, formé aux côtés de son frère, Cornelis Huysmans. Il est déjà maître et aguerri au moment de cette collaboration et offre avec son paysage un généreux écrin pour le chasseur et ses trophées imaginés par son jeune collaborateur au savoir-faire maîtrisé. La valeur de cette harmonieuse composition doit bien sûr aux talents respectifs des deux artistes mais aussi à la dimension spectaculaire de son support en cuivre.
