Vente anonyme, Munich, Sotheby's, 9 novembre 1988, lot 47.

The Milanese artist Franz Adam initially worked with his father, the painter Albrecht Adam (1786-1862). Later, he witnessed the war in Italy in 1849 and toured the battlefields of Hungary, Austria and Germany, specializing in battle scenes and equestrian portraits, both paintings and lithographs.

His talent for painting horses led him to take an interest in sport and he also produced paintings like the present example, where he could deploy his skills freely without the political constraints inherent in the representation of a battle scene. In this painting, which is in perfect condition, he fully explores the anatomy of both horses and lions, aided by his mise-en-scène and their powerfully dramatic poses.

___________________________________________
