Max Willborg (1933-2001), Stockholm.

Alexandre Moitte was the son and pupil of the painter Pierre Etienne Moitte (1722-1780) and brother of the of the famous sculptor Jean Guillaume Moitte (1746-1810). His expertise in drawing allowed him to teach it throughout his life. Along with the architect Pierre Deruelle, he was also director of the Clignancourt porcelain factory (M. J. Mauzin, ‘Pierre Deruelle et Alexandre Moitte, entrepreneurs de la manufacture de porcelaine de Clignancourt (1767-1800)’, in Le Vieux Montmartre, 2nd fasc. 1922). He is known as a painter for his genre scenes; the Hermitage Museum has one of his paintings, The Knife-grinder and his Family. The present painting is a fine example of his work. The deftly executed still lifes that surround this old hurdy-gurdy player are evidence of this unjustly neglected artist’s skill.
