Following earlier journeys to Switzerland and down the Rhine, Dupré travelled to Italy in 1786, funded by a scholarship that he had been awarded by a Haarlem learned society. He remained there for some five years and made numerous drawings of Italian cities, monuments and above all, landscapes.
