The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Paul Bril

The Temptation of St. Anthony

Oil on copper, in a modern faux marble and gilt frame in good condition

The copper panel is in a very good preserved state, it is flat and there are no deformations. It has been backed with soft wood and edged with oak fillets.

The paint layer is stable and secure and in very good original condition.

The paint texture, manifest particularly through the foliage to the trees, is in a good original state.

There are one or two small losses in the sky and tree upper left, a pentiment behind St. Anthony's head has been reduced and there is a thinning of some of the paint through the ghoulish figures in the foreground.

Fine, crisp details are intact.

Removal of the discoloured varnish would reintroduce the preserved chromatic and tonal values, including the atmospheric perspective through the trees and into the sky.

The painting presents well.
