The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Jan Breughel the Elder

A wooded estuary

Oil on copper, tondo, in a gilt and tortoise shell veneered frame with some losses.

The copper panel is flat and in a good preserved state, no dents or deformations to be detected.

The paint layer is in good original condition, overall.

In raking light small areas of raised paint are visible and there are one or two minor areas of historic paint loss to the sky and to the centre of the composition.

Fine details, throughout, are very well preserved including paint texture and impasted highlights; there is very slight wear to some of the rigging.

Removal of the discoloured and degraded varnish would reveal tonal and chromatic subtleties and atmospheric perspective.

The signature is well preserved and unadulterated.
