The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde

The Oudezijds Heerenlogement, on the confluence of the Grimburgwal and the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, Amsterdam

oil on oak panel

Oil on panel, in modern gilt wood frame I good condition

The oak panel is well preserved; it is chamfered on all sides to the reverse.

The panel is flat. The wood grain runs horizontally and is pronounced under raking light.

The paint surface is stable and secure.

A horizontal hairline fracture, approximately 5cm long, can be detected half up on from the right hand edge, and a similar fracture can be seen on the left hand side running through the bridge.

A small 1cm x 0.5 cm restored loss in the sky, upper left, can be seen under u-v lighting ,with a smaller loss just below it.

Detectable under u-v light is slight strengthening of minimal loss along the right hand fracture, some restored loss along the bottom edge and 1-2 minor repairs through the water.

The paint texture is very well preserved, noticeably through the foliage of the trees, but also the more impasted areas of the composition.

Fine details are intact, although there has been some slight strengthening to the black railings and the more vulnerable edges of the leaves.

The tonal values are intact and would be improved by the removal of the discoloured varnish.

Chromatic integrity is well maintained.

The painting presents well.
