The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Hendrick van Steenwijck the Younger The Interior of a Gothic Church Oil on copper, in a gilt and burr wood veneered frame in good condition. The copper panel is well preserved, it is flat and in an original state with no deformations. The paint layer is in a very good preserved state with original paint texture and impasted highlights intact. Very slight wear to the more vulnerable glazes, particularly in the shadows and thinness to the definition within the flagstone floor, and to the inscriptions on the tombs set in to the floor, is visible. One or two minor chipped losses are apparent. Crisp, fine details to the minutiae of the architecture are wonderfully preserved and the chromatic and tonal values are unaffected. Moderate tonal improvement would be gained from removal of the varnish. The painting presents very well.
