The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Balthasar van der Ast

Still life of flowers

Oil panel, in a dark painted and gilt wood frame, with some wear.

The oak panel is very well preserved.

It is evenly chamfered on all sides and has 1cm wide vertical edging strips.

The paint layer is stable and secure and in good original condition.

U-V lighting shows the painted out edging strips and a minor scattering of restorations through the shadow on the left and along a horizontal broken line though the top of the redcurrants and into the base of the vase.

Fine details to the flowers are preserved and the chromatic intensity is maintained.

Minor 'top note' glazes to the flowers have been compromised leading to a slight loss of modelling; the fly on the dog rose has lost definition.

The signature is very low down on the bottom right corner, under a layer of old varnish.

Subtle glazing to the water drops, shadows of the shells and the detail to the vase base has been thinned and loss of sharpness has resulted.

Removal of a discoloured varnish would improve the overall tonality and chromatic nuance.

Overall, the painting presents well.
