The Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist

oil on canvas

unframed: 75.7 x 62.6 cm.; 29¾ x 24⅝ in.

framed: 98.8 x 85.5 cm.; 38⅞ x 33⅝ in.

The canvas has a firm lining, the paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is rather yellowed. There are some visible discoloured retouchings scattered in the background, and a few small spots in the body of the Christ Child and in the Madonna's pink drapery. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these, as well as revealing retouching to a small repaired damage along the left side of the upper margin, approx. 1 x 1 cm. It also reveals further retouching scattered in the dark folds of the Madonna's draperies, in the shadows between Christ's legs and in his proper right forearm, as well as some lines in his hair, and scattered in the Baptist's hair. In overall fairly good condition.
