framed: 91 x 77.5 cm.; 35⅞ x 30½ in.

Gregorio Lorenzo Babbi was an 18th-century tenor of renown, with a remarkable vocal range. He made his operatic debut in Florence in 1730 and in 1741 entered the service of Charles III, King of Naples. In 1748 he was engaged by the Teatro San Carlo of Naples, where his wife, Giovanna Guaetta, was also a singer. He was pensioned in 1759.
