Portrait of a lady, half-length, in an orange striped dress with a lace collar and red and white bows

oil on canvas

unframed: 73.4 x 59.5 cm.; 28⅞ x 23⅜ in.

framed: 86.2 x 72.9 cm.; 34 x 28¾ in.

The canvas is lined and the paint surface is clean with a slightly discoloured varnish. There is a degree of wear throughout the painted surface, and a handful of surface scuff marks are visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick and opaque varnish underneath which scattered, fine lines of retouching are visible, as well as tiny spots and fine lines throughout her hair and headpiece. There are also older, sparsely scattered fine lines of retouching scattered in her face (mostly to reduce the appearance of craquelure). Retouching in the background is only visible sparsely scattered along the margins, and to a fine, diagonal line along the centre of the right margin approx. 5cm long.
