The canvas has an old relining, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is dark and discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick, opaque varnish and some small retouchings alone stretcher marks, and to an area of loss in the upper centre above the sitter's head. There are also small retouchings scattered through his face, collar and hand. Further intervention is difficult to discern beneath the milkly varnish. In overall fair condition and would benefit from cleaning.
