Description

A Charoite Sphere

Charo River, Yakutsk, Russia

3 inches (7.8 cm) in diameter. 1.4 pounds (635 grams). Custom lucite base.

This specimen has been polished to reveal details of its natural character, displaying swirls of purple, lavender, and white, with subtle amber accents.

Only found in Siberia and not scientifically described until 1978, charoite is a rare silicate mineral found where syenite has intruded into and altered limestone deposits.

Ranging from soft lavender to deep purple, charoite often exhibits translucency with a near pearl-like luster. These rich colors—coupled with striking swirls and chatoyance—lend to an appearance that looks almost artificial. The polished charoite sphere offered here is anything but synthetic, and a remarkable specimen of a "new" and rare mineral.
