Description
Charoite Box
Siberia, Russia
5 by 3 by 1¾ inches (12.7 x 7.6 x 4.5 cm). 2 pounds (0.9 kg). Hinged top.
This box displays polished swirls of purple, lavender, white, and with subtle amber accents.
Only found in Siberia and not scientifically described until 1978, charoite is a rare silicate mineral found where syenite has intruded into and altered limestone deposits.
Ranging from soft lavender to deep purple, charoite often exhibits translucency with a near pearl-like luster. These rich colors—coupled with striking swirls and chatoyance—lend to an appearance that looks almost artificial. The polished charoite box offered here was made by famed lapidary artist Konstantin Libman, and is anything but synthetic. It represents a beautiful and functional specimen of a "new" and rare mineral.
