Probably, German art market, May 1968 (possibly as Cornelis de Heem);
American private collection, since at least 1980.

The identity of the Monogrammist C.DH is still unclear, but the artist seems to have been active in the mid-seventeenth century and the present lot is a characteristic work featuring an array of ripe fruits with an exotic bird perched atop them. Paintings by this anonymous master were previously attributed to Cornelis de Heem due to the initials, but the triangular composition and color palette emphasizing browns and tans depart from that artist's work.

We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
