Monogrammist C.DH

active Northern Netherlands c. 1630 - 1665

Still life with fruits on a ledge and a white cockatoo

monogrammed lower right: . C.DH . (DH in ligature)

oil on canvas

canvas: 32 by 47 in.; 81.3 by 119.4 cm.

framed: 39 1/2 by 54 1/2 in.; 100.3 by 138.4 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The still life image reads well with the light reflecting off the fruit still visible. Frame abrasion is visible along the lower left edge and there is a strip of discolored retouching along the left edge to address frame abrasion. No other retouching is visible to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, the varnish is difficult to read through, but an older campaign of retouching is visible in the upper right background surrounding the butterfly, and the varnish may obscure further retouching. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.

Probably, German art market, May 1968 (possibly as Cornelis de Heem);
American private collection, since at least 1980.

The identity of the Monogrammist C.DH is still unclear, but the artist seems to have been active in the mid-seventeenth century and the present lot is a characteristic work featuring an array of ripe fruits with an exotic bird perched atop them. Paintings by this anonymous master were previously attributed to Cornelis de Heem due to the initials, but the triangular composition and color palette emphasizing browns and tans depart from that artist's work.

We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
