oil on panel

panel: 12 by 17 in.; 31 by 43.1 cm.

framed: 17 1/2 by 22 3/8 in.; 44.4 by 56.8 cm.

The panel is made of a single board and is faintly beveled on all four edges. The panel is uncradled and planar. A lively and somewhat loose brushwork is visible beneath a slightly discolored varnish. Some passages have lost some definition, though this may also be consistent with the looser technique. A small loss and scuff to the surface is visible at the center of the right edge. Inspection under UV reveals a thick varnish that fluoresces unevenly across the surface, impeding inspection and possibly obscuring an older campaign of restoration. A few recent small retouched losses are visible at the extreme edges. There is a thin line of restoration to address a scratch in the lower right corner and some fine strokes in the lower left corner. A dark green pigment throughout the landscape in the background and the architecture fluoresces consistently under UV, and there may be some scattered passages of strengthening to the shadows throughout the architecture as well as in the foliage in the foreground. Some fine thin lines of retouching are visible in the foreground to the left of the building at center, possibly to address a small area of craquelure. Offered in a carved wood frame with some dark staining, with decorative carved embellishments at the corners and around the inner liner.

This small landscape, filled with charming figures and details, compares closely to works by 17th century artists of the Frankenthal School, including Anton Mirou (1578-1621) and Mattheus Adolfsz. Molanus (1591-1645).
