Night-time view of the Rialto on the Feast of the Redentore

signed lower left: Gruba[c]s

oil on canvas

canvas: 29 1/4 by 41 1/2 in.; 74.3 by 105.4 cm.

framed: 35.5 by 48 in.; 74.3 by 121.9 cm.

The canvas is either unlined or very thinly lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well beneath clear varnish with impasto preserved throughout the lower half of the composition. 3 small spots of repair are visible to the naked eye in the upper right quadrant in the sky. Under UV inspection, retouching in the areas surrounding the 3 small spots is visible, as well as very few scattered dots and thin lines in the dark sky, a few on the column at the extreme left, and a few to reinforce waves in the water. Overall the painting is in good condition and is ready to hang. Offered in a carved giltwood frame with decorative corners.

This large well preserved canvas depicts one of the favorite themes of Giovanni Grubacs and indeed of his father and brother as well: the feast of the Redentore, celebrated on the third Sunday in July in recognition of Venice surviving the great plague of 1576. Here, on the Saturday evening prior, decorated boats and barges flood the Grand Canal in anticipation of a grand fireworks display.
