This large well preserved canvas depicts one of the favorite themes of Giovanni Grubacs and indeed of his father and brother as well: the feast of the Redentore, celebrated on the third Sunday in July in recognition of Venice surviving the great plague of 1576. Here, on the Saturday evening prior, decorated boats and barges flood the Grand Canal in anticipation of a grand fireworks display.
