The Bay of Naples
Property of a Philadelphia Art Collector
1790 - 1844 Battersea, London
The Bay of Naples
signed and dated lower right: S. Pether 1823.
oil on canvas
canvas: 13 by 16 in.; 33 by 40.6 cm.
framed: 20 3/4 by 23 1/2 in.; 52 by 59.8 cm.
The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. There is a small patch on the reverse to address an old small repair near the lower edge. The painting presents a strong image overall, with the crisp detail and rich color well-preserved. There is a faint pattern of craquelure across surface, although this is not too distracting. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish. Some thin strokes of strengthening are visible in the boat at left, the boat near the distant center, and the one docked at right, as well as a few scattered strokes in the pier at right and here and there in the sky. A spot of retouching to address the aforementioned small repair is visible in the lower left, below the flat. More concentrated areas of retouching are visible in the background around the lighthouse near the right edge and in the sky near the upper edge at right. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
