Portrait of Sarah Siddons (1755 - 1831), bust-length

oil on canvas

canvas: 30 by 25 in.; 76.2 by 63.5 cm.

framed: 34 by 29 ½ in.; 86.4 by 29.5 cm.

The canvas is wax lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well through the varnish though some texture has been flattened in the lining process. The craquelure is visible throughout the background as dark lines, likely the result of earlier retouching. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky but broad strokes of retouching are visible at the lower left and lower right corners, around the sitter's arms. Other retouching may be present beneath the varnish. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.

The present lot derives from Lawrence's several bust-length portraits of Sarah Siddons, who was a tragic Shakespearean actress celebrated for her portrayal of Lady Macbeth. Lawrence was romantically involved with two of Siddons's daughters and apparently caused them both great distress, but Siddons remained close friends with Lawrence until her death.
