Portrait of Benjamin West, P.R.A. (1738 - 1820), bust-length

oil on canvas

canvas: 30 by 25 in.; 76.2 by 63.5 cm.

framed: 36 ½ by 31 ¼ in.; 92.7 by 79.4 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The portrait image reads well with painterly details in the face legible beneath the yellowing varnish. The varnish does not extend to the top of the visible canvas, leaving a thin strip of unvarnished painting visible along the top edge. Minor frame abrasion is present at the lower left corner. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky and impedes further inspection, though an earlier campaign of retouching is barely visible to the right of the sitter's head. The painting may appear crisper after a cleaning and fresh varnish but otherwise can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.

This portrait is a high quality studio copy of the bust from Lawrence's full-length portrait of West, now in the Wadsworth Athenaeum.1 The full-length version was commissioned by the American Academy of Fine Art, New York in 1818 and completed after West's death in 1820, at which time Lawrence succeeded West as President of the Royal Academy.
