Portrait of a lawyer, bust-length

oil on canvas

canvas: 31 ¼ by 29 in.; 79.4 by 73.7 cm.

framed: 37 ⅛ by 34 ½ in.; 94.3 by 87.6 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well despite old yellowing varnish. A few repaired scratches and areas of abrasion are visible in the background, such as in the upper and center right, and the varnish has blanched slightly to the left of the sitter's head. Under UV inspection, the varnish is thick and milky and impedes further inspection, but an earlier area of retouching to the left of the sitter's head is faintly visible. The painting would likely improve with a cleaning and fresh varnish. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame with nicks and losses and a nameplate that reads "Sir Godfrey Kneller."

This portrait bears similarities with the style of Michael Dahl (1659 - 1743), a Swedish-born portrait painter who worked in England for aristocrats. The sitter here is a lawyer based on his attire and wig, though his identity is unknown.
