William Williams

Llanfair-ar-y-bryn, Carmarthenshire 1727 - 1791 Bristol

Portrait of a gentleman in a landscape, full length

oil on canvas

canvas: 30 by 25 in.; 76.2 by 63.5 cm.

framed: 35 ½ by 30 ½ in.; 90.2 by 77.5 cm.

The canvas is lined and is stable on its stretcher. The portrait image reads well beneath older varnish. Stretcher bar marks are visible around all 4 edges but are not distracting. Some minor frame abrasion is visible at the lower left edge. Under UV inspection, a repaired small circular hole is visible at the top center, and much of the background fluoresces unevenly. An older campaign of retouching is difficult to read, but more recently the dark foliage on the right has been thoroughly retouched. Very little retouching is visible on the figure. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a simply carved giltwood frame.

Williams was born in Wales and was apparently a seafarer early in life before moving to Philadelphia. His maritime past inspired his novel The Journal of Llewellin Penrose, Seaman, which is considered by many to be the first American novel. Williams was friendly with Benjamin Franklin and taught a young Benjamin West.
