Portrait of a Gentleman, possibly John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722)

oil on canvas

canvas: 9 ⅞ by 8 ½ in.; 25.1 by 21.6 cm.

framed: 13 by 11 in.; 33 by 27.9 cm.

The canvas appears to be unlined. The painting is somewhat dirty, but the colored fabrics remain vibrant, particularly the red. This work has not been recently restored. There are stretcher bar marks visible at all edges at a pattern of craquelure throughout. A spot of loss is visible in the lower right, and there are some abrasions from the frame along the right edge. To the naked eye there appears to have been an old campaign of fine restoration, for example, along the shadow of his face at left, but inspection under UV reveals an old milky varnish that prevents further inspection. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt frame with some nicks and losses.
