Designed as a stylised ribbon, set with an oval and a cushion-shaped sapphire weighing 55.19 carats and 25.97 carats respectively, embellished with circular-cut and baguette diamonds.


Accompanied by SSEF report no. 113964 and no. 113965 and Gübelin report no. 20070092 and no. 20070093, each stating that the sapphires are of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating, together with four appendix letters.

Also accompanied by a copy of the inventory from Hariot Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava (1843-1936) that mentions:

'Two large sapphires set with diamonds as pendant – given me by people of Punjaub (sic) & sent after my return’.

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 113964 and no. 113965 and Gübelin report no. 20070092 and no. 20070093, each stating that the oval and cushion-shaped sapphires weighing 55.19 carats and 25.97 carats, measuring 28.81 x 6.08 x 12.08mm and 18.73 x 15.56 x 10.45mm respectively, are of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating, together with four appendix letters. Sapphires blue of medium strong to strong saturation, both displaying colour zoning and a few typical inclusions, some visible scratches and abrasions on facet edges due to age and wear, girdles abraded; for further information on the sapphires, please refer to the gemmological reports. Diamonds estimated to weigh a total of approximately 7.80 - 8.80 carats, on average G-H colour, SI-I clarity, as gauged and graded in the mount. Scratches to the metal consistent with age and wear. Overall, in good condition. Total gross weight approximately 41 grams. Measurements approximately 59 x 35 x 13mm.

The sapphires were given to Maureen Constance Guinness, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava (1907-1998) by her grandmother-in-law, Hariot Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava (1843-1936).

By family tradition, the sapphires were later mounted in the brooch by Cartier in the 1930s.
