Stéphanie de Beauharnais was born in 1789. Her father was a first cousin of Alexandre de Beauharnais, husband of Joséphine, future Empress. She is therefore a first cousin of Eugène and Hortense de Beauharnais. She was adopted by the Emperor who gave her the titles of French Princess and Imperial Highness. On April 8, 1806, the year in which this miniature was painted by Dagoty, she married Prince Karl of Baden, who received the title of Grand Duke from Napoleon. From this union five children were born, three girls and two boys. The boys died young (although there is a theory that one of them was the famous Kaspar Hauser). From their three daughters descend the royal and princely families of Belgium, Monaco, Luxembourg, Romania, Yugoslavia etc...
