The circular case pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds, circular dial similarly-set and highlighted with panther coat motifs applied with black enamel and blued steel hands, to a black alligator bracelet and gold folding clasp set with brilliant-cut diamonds, automatic movement, case diameter 33mm, signed Cartier, numbered, Swiss and International assay marks for 18 carat gold, maker's mark for Cartier, gross weight 67.06 grams, certificate of authenticity, pouch and case stamped Cartier.

The Ballon Bleu collection was introduced by Cartier in 2007. Yet, it feels like it has been part of the Cartier catalogue for much longer than just 14 years. Its case is unique in watchmaking history. Reminiscent of a pebble, its rounded top and bottom make it particularly elegant as well as extremely comfortable. Furthermore, the signature cabochon sapphire crown, a usually fragile part of any Cartier watch, is protected by a crown guard repeating the shape of the main case without compromising on the allure of the design. The Maison has used the Ballon Bleu line to produce some of the most distinguished creations of the last decade. It was for example the case with some of the CPCP (Collection Privée Cartier Paris) pieces with the Flying Tourbillon ref. 3089 introduced in 2009. Cartier took also advantage of the large circular dial of the Ballon Bleu to create exclusive decorated pieces requiring the highest level of craftmanship. With the present lot, Cartier evokes the panther, the symbol of the brand, through the spots of the coat of the feline. Made of black enamel, the spots are surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds creating a most attractive contrast. The superb dial is perfectly framed by the bezel decorated by two rows of diamonds. Finally, the transition between the case and the strap is ensured by the diamond-set lugs, adding the final touch of refinement to the piece. The present lot is further distinguished by being fitted with an automatic movement, proving the exceptional attention to every component of this attractive piece.
