It has been suggested that the sitter for this delightful portrait was Lady Mary Stewart but this identification is doubted by Lady Stewart’s family. The portrait of Lady Stewart was included in an exhibition in 1923 and reviewed in The Studio magazine and as this portrait is clearly dated four years later, the identity of the sitter must remain a mystery for now. It is easier to identify the stuffed toy held by the child which appears to be a mohair lion made by Steiff in the 1920s.
