Le Pho

Carefully set up on a white table, we find here a small porcelain washer, embroidered cases on a black box, and a vase containing a few branches of pussy willow in bloom, foreboding of spring. Painted in ink and gouache on silk, with a seal of the artist, the work was created in 1938, one year after he left his country of origin to settle in France for good.

Some of the objects in this work can be found on two other paintings sold at Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 5 April 2010, lots 91 and 92 (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). The objects are arranged differently on a table, but the same calmness and serenity are to be found there, leading us peacefully into a world of memories and nostalgia.

Disposés avec soin sur une table blanche, on observe ici un petit rince-pinceaux en porcelaine, des étuis brodés posés sur une boîte noire, et un vase contenant quelques branches de saule à chatons en fleurs, comme un avant-goût de printemps. Peinte à l’encre et gouache sur soie, et portant un cachet de l’artiste, l’œuvre a été réalisée en 1938, soit un an après qu’il a quitté son pays d’origine pour s’installer en France définitivement.

On distingue que certains d’objets de cette œuvre se trouvent sur deux autres tableaux vendus chez Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, 5 avril 2010, lots 91 et 92 (Fig. 1 et Fig. 2). Les objets y sont agencés différemment sur une table, mais on y retrouve le même calme et la même sérénité qui nous conduisent paisiblement dans un monde de souvenirs et de nostalgie.
