In a plain setting, the Virgin Mary is embodied in a Vietnamese mother, wearing a transparent silk veil. The infant Jesus, with his hair cut in the style of a small Vietnamese child, is held in his mother's right arm, her gaze full of gentleness and love. She graciously hands him a peach, symbol of longevity. This evokes both Lorenzo di Credi's Madonna and Child with a Pomegranate (Fig. 1) and the iconography of the Boddhisattva Guanyin, known as the Giver of Children (Fig. 2), from the Asian tradition. The two cultures merge here to create a poetic, intimate world of great quality.
