Ivanoff represents the French sculptor François-Victor Cogné sitting in his studio, surrounded by his sculptor's tools and two of his most famous works. Renowned for his portraits of politicians in particular, he participated in numerous monuments dedicated to the great men who made the history of the 20th Century.
The first sculpture, lower left, is an equestrian portrait of Marshal Lyautey. Small in size, it is probably a preparatory model made following a commission from the French Consulate in Casablanca. On the death of the Marshal in 1934, the Consulate wished to erect a commemorative monument, which was finally inaugurated four years later. It can be seen today in front of the current French Consulate General in Casablanca. Several years later, Cogné created another statue of Lyautey, erected in Nancy.
The second sculpture represents a bust of Georges Clémenceau. Several versions have been sold on the art market, notably one in bronze with a green patina, cast by Barbedienne (Paris, Tajan, 18 May 1998, lot 45) and another in bronze with a black patina (sale Paris, Richard, 17 May 2018, lot 17). Cogné made another sculpture representing Georges Clémenceau, also with the Barbedienne foundry but this time full-length, inaugurated in 1932 and still visible in Paris along the Champs Elysées.

Renommé pour ses portraits d’hommes politiques notamment, il participe à de nombreux monuments dédiés aux grands hommes qui ont fait l’histoire du XXe siècle.
La première sculpture, en bas à gauche de la composition, est un portrait équestre du Maréchal Lyautey. De petites dimensions, il s’agit sans doute d’un modèle préparatoire réalisé suite à la commande du Consulat français de Casablanca. A la mort du maréchal en 1934, le consulat souhaite en effet ériger un monument commémoratif, qui sera finalement inauguré quatre ans plus tard. Il est aujourd’hui visible devant l’actuel consulat général de France, à Casablanca. Cogné réalisera plusieurs années après une autre statue de Lyautey, érigée à Nancy.
