In the letter to his friend in appreciation of his recent acquisition of the present torso at the galerie Interférences in 1989, Gaston Vogel writes that it is 'the most exquisite that I ever encountered. It is more beautiful that the one recently exhibited in Cologne and comes from a famous Belgium collection which has been recently sold, about a year ago.'
Compare a Khmer gray sandstone torso of a divinity, Baphuon style, 11th Century, sold in our New York rooms, 15th February 2005, lot 632, from the collections of the Kennedy family homes.
