3 volumes, 4to (252 x 193mm.), half-titles, titles printed in red and black, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, 9 folding engraved plates, 2 large folding letterpress tables (one at end of each volume), errata and privilege leaves at end of volume 3, contemporary cat's-paw calf, spines gilt in compartments, marbled edges, quire Bb in volume 2 slightly foxed, bindings slightly rubbed
FIRST EDITION. An extensive historical work on the progressive nature of ancient civilisations which was much admired by Edward Gibbon. It is arranged in three sections of biblical history, from the Flood to the end of the Babylonian Captivity in 539 BC. At the end of the third volume is a section of extracts from Chinese historians by Michel-Ange-André le Roux Deshauterayes, Orientalist and professor of Arabic.
