Bélier I

designed 1990, executed 2008

number 5B from an edition of 8

executed by Fonderie d'Art Bocquel, France

patinated bronze

monogrammed FXL, numbered 5/8B and impressed with the foundry mark

37 x 40 ½ x 15 in. (93.9 x 102.8 x 38.1 cm)

Overall in very good condition. Prominently installed on Michelle Smith’s outdoor terrace, this statement-making and rare sculpture by François-Xavier Lalanne is a particularly rare iteration of the Bélier form in bronze. When viewed in person, the patina presents with a richly textured “hatched” surface quality and a superb variegated patina displaying hues of a deep rich green with golden ochre undertones. Compared to the previous lot, the copper hues on the present Bélier are slightly more pronounced on the head and horns. The patinated bronze surface has recently been sensitively cleaned and waxed by a professional restorer with strong expertise in works by Les Lalanne. The bronze presents with surface and casting irregularities inherent to the making and commonly seen in works by the artist, which include particulate inclusions and surface imperfections to the bronze surfaces throughout, and are typical for works by the artist.. The patinated surface with light and scattered areas of discoloration concentrated to the cheeks and the feet of the Bélier, not visible unless closely inspected. Offered en suite with the preceding lot, the present lot provides the rare opportunity for Lalanne collectors to acquire a matching pair of this dynamic and graceful rare form.
