Peter de Wint was one of the most original and influential watercolourists of the 19th century. Ranking alongside Constable for his fresh and fluent response to nature, Martin Hardie, the great authority on British Watercolours, described him as a marvellous technician, who was one of the few who could make colours sing.

The present work shows a view near to Lowther Castle - the seat of one of de Wint's principal patrons - William, 2nd Earl of Lonsdale (1787-1872). Dating to the late 1830s, with its grand-scale and bold compostion, it is a very strong example of his work.
