This Limoges Crucifix is a fine example of the 12th century champlevé enamel technique where the artist hollows out alveoli in a copper plate to fill them with various colors in enamel. Modeled in high relief in copper and applied to a cross, this Crucifix was undoubtedly intended to adorn the center of a larger cross. Our Christ stands out by its crown engraved with ornaments, the halo in polychrome enamel, its slightly inclined long-haired head, as well as the modeling of its body dressed in a finely engraved perizonium.

Ce Crucifix de Limoges est un bel exemple de la technique de l'émail champlevé du XIIe siècle où l'artiste creuse des alvéoles dans une plaque en cuivre pour les remplir de couleurs variés en émail. Modelé en haut relief en cuivre et appliqué sur une croix, ce crucifix était sans doute destiné pour orner le centre d'une croix plus grande (P. Thoby, op. cit.). Notre Christ se distingue par sa couronne gravée d'ornements, la nimbe en émail polychrome, sa tête à longue chevelure, légèrement inclinée, et le modelé de son corps habillé d'un périzonium finement gravé.
