A. Askenasy, Frankfurt

Otto Weigmann, ed., Schwind, des Meinsters Werke, Stuttgart and Leipzig, p. 524, illustrated

An Austrian painter who spent most of his career in Germany, Moritz von Schwind, was part of the late Romantic movement of artists, influenced by the Nazarenes, who favoured poetic chivalrous subjects often set in medieval settings. In an Italianate landscape von Schwind shows a thwarted lover contemplating the lady of his heart who has chosen another. The artist shows the young man holding a now pointless lute, trying to come to terms with his fate.
