The present painting is based on a recorded partial copy after the Averoldi Altarpiece, dating to 1520–22, in the basilica church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia, which is signed by Titian on the column of the panel showing Saint Sebastian.1 The partial copy which the present panel follows more closely, most notably in the background details, was in the collection of King Charles I at Whitehall Palace, London.2
