The panel is cradled, and the paint surface is slightly dirty with a slightly discoloured varnish. The paint surface is rather worn and there are small, discoloured retouchings scattered throughout - these are mainly to old, psmall losses resulting from historic flaking. The paint surface is stable now. There are a few unrestored small losses, notably the one in Sebastian's proper left knee (visible in the reproduction). There are also visible scattered retouchings along some vertical old splits or joins which run the height of the panel - notably 15 and 25cm from the left margin, and along the right side of Sebastian's body. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this and further reveals the extensive of retouching throughout the whole composition.

The present painting is based on a recorded partial copy after the Averoldi Altarpiece, dating to 1520–22, in the basilica church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia, which is signed by Titian on the column of the panel showing Saint Sebastian. The partial copy which the present panel follows more closely, most notably in the background details, was in the collection of King Charles I at Whitehall Palace, London.2
