Auguste Riffaterre trained at the Municipal School in Limoges and was a freelance decorator who worked during the 1890's. A Limoges pâte-sur-pâte rectangular plaque decorated by Riffaterre with a similar composition to taht seen on the vase was sold at Christie's New York, April 20-21, 2005, lot 144. The scene on the roundel appears on a plate by Riffaterre illustrated in Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, The Art of Ceramic Relief Decoration, 1849-1992, London, 1992, p. 89, fig. 55.
