A LIMOGE PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE BLUE-GROUND VASE AND A LIMOGE PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE DARK-GREEN-GROUND ROUNDEL, CIRCA 1895


by Auguste Riffaterre, the vase decorated in white slip against a pale blue ground with a scantily-clad maiden with a bird perched on her finger underneath a prunus tree, signed incised ATE RIFFATERRE, LIMOGES FRANCE in green enamel; the round decorated in white slip reserved on a dark-green ground with a young girl playing a horn sat in a prunus tree, signed Ate Riffaterre/ Limoges in gilding, framed

height of vase 12½ in.; diameter of roundel 5⅞ in.

Auguste Riffaterre trained at the Municipal School in Limoges and was a freelance decorator who worked during the 1890's. A Limoges pâte-sur-pâte rectangular plaque decorated by Riffaterre with a similar composition to taht seen on the vase was sold at Christie's New York, April 20-21, 2005, lot 144. The scene on the roundel appears on a plate by Riffaterre illustrated in Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, The Art of Ceramic Relief Decoration, 1849-1992, London, 1992, p. 89, fig. 55.
