[AFRICA — TRAVEL AND SPORTING]

8vo (7 1/8 x 4 7/16 in.; 180 x 112 mm). 172pp. on ruled leaves, neat manuscript in black ink; one or two stray spots, minor fingersoiling. Full black limp calf over card, covers and spine with double gilt rules, marbled endpapers, manuscript title on white paper pasted to front free endpaper; overall rubbed, joints weak.

This manuscript account of big game hunting through southern Africa begins with a lengthy quote from Livingstone's Expedition to the Zambesi that deals with symptoms of fever. The anonymous author then follows with his own remedy for the affliction. The narrative then goes on to relay hunts for rhinoceros, buffalo, wildebeest, and lion. Of the latter, the author writes: "Today has been the day of the whole expedition & there has been so much talking it over & telling adventure over the camp fire that I have scarcely patience to write a connected account of it."
