ACKERMANN [PUBLISHER] — HENRY ALKEN

[Ackermann's Sporting Scraps]. London: R. Ackermann, [ca. 1861]

Oblong 4to (8 7/16 x 10 5/8 in.; 214 x 270 mm). 36 hand-colored aquatint plates, heightened with gum arabic, by J. Harris after H. Alken, W.J. Shayer, and W.A. Knell; some spotting, occasionally affecting plates. Tan polished calf, bound by J. Larkins, covers with multiple gilt rules and gilt floral cornerpieces, spine with raised bands in six compartments, second with gilt-lettered red morocco label, others with repeat overall decoration in gilt, all edges gilt, inner dentelles gilt, coated plum endpapers; rebacked preserving original spine, overall wear some loss of calf, small repair to upper cover.

A rare group of skillfully rendered sporting prints. These small format aquatints are quite scarce, with only infrequent mentions in the relevant literature. The title itself is not in Abbey, Schwerdt, or Tooley.
