Before his emergence as a Pop Art icon, best known for his bold fusion of celebrity and commercialism with mechanical reproduction, Andy Warhol’s body of work was remarkably more whimsical, almost homespun in its aesthetic. One of seven artist’s books produced in the 1950s, Wild Raspberries weds designs after early 20th century representations of imaginative culinary treats with recipes by society decorator Suzie Frankfurt and the calligraphic handwriting of the artist’s mother. The brightly colored pages were painted with Dr. Martin’s watercolors by Warhol and his friends, each example unique in coloration. The book exemplifies Warhol’s early work while simultaneously championing his ideology of anything being art and everyone being an artist.
