MANNER OF HANS HOLBEIN, CIRCA 1900

PORTRAIT OF A LADY, HALF LENGTH, WITH AN ELABORATE FRENCH HOOD AND VEIL, FACING LEFT

oil on panel

panel: 8½ by 6¾ in.; 21 by 17.2 cm.

framed: 13¾ by 12¼ in.; 34.9 by 31.1 cm.

The panel is stable and uncradled. The lower portion of the reverse of the panel seems to have been shaved and slightly thinned. There is a slight horizontal concave bow. The painted surface is stable and reads clearly, though is slightly dirty. There is a thin crack with some very minor associated losses that runs from the center of the left edge to the sitter's shoulder. A thin vertical line of retouching runs about 3 inches near the lower left edge. There is a faint pattern of craquelure. UV light reveals a thick milky varnish and more recent scattered retouches in the blacks of her costume, in the column and base along the left edge, and at the upper edge. There are some fine strokes of retouching around her fingers, and some scattered retouching to her face and hood. Offered in a simple wooden frame with a gilt liner.
