D. Angulo Iñiguez, “Varios Pintores de Palencia, El Maestro de Astorga,” in Archivio Español de Arte, 1945, vol. 18, no. 70, p. 230;
C.R. Post, A History of Spanish Painting, vol. X, Cambridge, Massachusetts 1950, p. 428, fig. 181 (together with a related panel of the Annunciation).
When published by both Angulo Iñiguez and Post, this painting was paired with a Presentation at the Temple, now location unknown. Angulo Iñiguez considered them to be by a student of Bartolomé de Castro, an artist active in the northern Spanish city of Palencia. Post concurred that they were likely Palencian, but thought that they might date slightly earlier, and be by a painter influenced by the Master of Frómista.
