STILL LIFE OF ROSES, TULIPS, AN IRIS AND OTHER FLOWERS, IN A GLASS VASE, RESTING ON A TABLE
oil on canvas
canvas: 39½ by 32 in.; 100.4 by 81.2 cm.
framed: 48 by 40½ in.; 121.9 by 102.9 cm.
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, email@example.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This work has not been recently restored. The canvas has an old glue lining. The cracking is very slightly raised, but the paint layer is stable and the lining should certainly remain. The paint layer is noticeably dirty. Under ultraviolet light, one can see that some of the flowers may have been more recently cleaned, and there are some broad retouches in the crimson color of the tulips. There are faintly visible retouches to the background immediately surrounding some of the flowers and in the marble tabletop. While it is recommended that the work be cleaned, thinness to the paint layer would need to be retouched, particularly in the background.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. We are grateful to Fred Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Verelst, based on images. He believes the painting to date from later in Verelst's career, but still before circa 1700.
