Purchased by Peniston 1st Viscount Melbourne (1745–1828), probably between 1770–80, for his family seat, Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire where it was hung in the Dining Room;

By descent to his son, William, 2nd Viscount Melbourne (1779–1848);

By descent to his sister, Emily, Countess Cowper/Viscountess Palmerston (1787–1869);

By descent to her grandson, Francis, 7th Earl Cowper (1834–1905), when (1869) the canvas was moved to his family seat,Panshanger House, Hertfordshire where it was hung in the Small Dining Room;

By descent to his niece, Ethel (Ettie) Desborough (1867–1952);

By descent to her daughter, the Hon. Imogen Viscountess Gage (1906–1969), when the canvas was moved to the Gage family seat, Firle Place, East Sussex where it was hung in the Long Gallery;

Thence by descent.
