The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Jacob van Ruisdael Landscape with cornfields and a thatched barn Oil on panel, in a modern painted frame in good condition

The oak panel support is well preserved; it is evenly chamfered on all sides with no splits or deformations. There is a small horizontal hairline fracture, approximately 5cm in length, in from the central left hand edge. The paint layer is very well preserved and impasted highlights and textured brushwork remains unaffected. Under u-v light a minor scattering of pin prick paint loss can be detected across the surface, mostly confined to the sky. Slight thinness to the paint layer through the tree, left, and through the foliage in the foreground is visible. Removal of the discoloured and degraded varnish would improve overall tonality and reveal original well preserved chromatic values.
