Amsterdam 1636 - 1672

Southern landscape with a man shooting by a pond, a gentleman on horseback with a boy, and a shepherd with his flock beyond

signed and dated lower right: A. V Velde / 1663

oil on oak panel, with an unidentified collector's red wax seal on the reverse

unframed: 21.5 x 30 cm.; 8 1/2 x 11 7/8 in.

framed: 31 x 38.9 cm.; 12 1/4 x 15 1/4 in.

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish discoloured. Fine lines of tenting have started to appear, throughout. Discoloured retouchings are visible along the upper margin in the sky. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the varnish, which fluoresces opaquely - the aforementioned retouchings along the upper margin are just visible, as is a small area of retouching in the top of the tree trunk, just left of centre; further intervention is impossible to discern, however. The painting is in apparently overall good condition, though attention should be paid to the areas of tenting.
