oil on oak panel, with an unidentified collector's red wax seal on the reverse

unframed: 21.5 x 30 cm.; 8 1/2 x 11 7/8 in.

framed: 31 x 38.9 cm.; 12 1/4 x 15 1/4 in.

Freiherr Bernhard von Hornstein (b. 1761), who was married to Theresia Countess Preysing zu Alten-Preysing (1765-1804);
His Estate and pictures, including the present lot, were sold in 1828 to an ancestor of the present owner;
Thence by descent.

The style and composition of this painting may be usefully compared to other works by Van de Velde dating from the early 1660s, such as that dated 1662, in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 1916)1, that in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-444),2 and in another landscape dated 1663, the current whereabouts of which is unknown.
