The small panel is uncradled, flat and stable. In raking light it is possible to see some shallow indentations in the sheep's shoulder (approx. 2 cm. long), neck, and nose (each less than a cm.). Ultraviolet light appears to reveal that the horizontal area in the shoulder may have been slightly retouched, but there appears to be overall very little intervention. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish somewhat discoloured, with some slight degree of wear visible in the darker tones around the sheep's lower half. The painting is in overall good condition.
